This course guides beginner- and intermediate-level painters in skill-building and learning practical portraiture techniques. Students may work with either oils or acrylics and will receive instruction specific to the medium of choice. By tackling multiple projects, students will gain an understanding of how to select and create good reference photos, as well as experience in translating their images onto canvas. We’ll also explore modes of expression through colour, composition, and paint application. For those who have never used oil paints before, acrylics are the recommended option. Come experience the wonder and joy of your creativity in motion. The class will develop a fundamental understanding of stop motion animation while exploring an exciting variety of animation techniques. Students will use clay, paper, charcoal, lego, toys, found objects and more to bring their imaginations to life. Through short screenings and demos the class will draw inspiration from the history of animation and contemporary stop-motion artists. Wednesday 6-9 p.m.

Offering students with any level of experience an opportunity to learn how to paint using the grid technique - using black and white oil paint to transfer a source image onto canvas. The class is as much about teaching the process as it is how to paint. The first source image will be provided after which students can choose to use their own source material as they continue on. Previous students that have started a portrait can continue to paint and complete their painting in this class.

This process is very detailed, but highly successful.

It is mandatory that all new students attend the first week as canvases will be given out and prep work for painting will be given, and students will have a tour of Alex's Studio. Please come with a pencil and ruler first week.

Material Fee - $70
(for Canvas and printing) Students still need to purchase brushes and paints

This course is designed to capture the joys of photography – to create interesting images that combine the sensibility or feelings of a photographic eye with technique and tools of photography equipment - to distinguish between superior and mediocre images and to better understand the harmony of artistic elements, compositions, light and exposure, with the capabilities of film, the camera, lenses and accessories.

The course will be comprised of eight weekly 3-hour sessions, two of which will be ‘travel shots’ to events or places to do on-site photography.

This is a progressive course, from an understanding of the basic principals of photography to equipment, artistic elements, travel tips, technique, subject, people, landscape, presentation and preservation.

Digital Images will be used extensively to illustrate technique, composition, and exposure.

During the teaching sessions, students will be required to do a photographic project each week and present five images at the following lesson for evaluation and learning. Photos can be brought in on CD or card reader or memory stick/data traveller devices.

This course in glass fusing will be suitable for the beginner and for those with some experience in fusing and slumping. Students will learn the process of working with glass in a kiln and will learn the basics of operating a glass kiln. Colour and layering techniques will be explored as well. Each student will have an opportunity to complete a variety of projects, such as a set  of coasters, a small plate and decorative pieces. Have you ever wanted to paint your daughter, grandson, husband or wife?
Maybe a famous movie star or just an engaging expression? This workshop will
focus on analyzing, drawing and painting the key anatomical features that
lead to an expressive smile or a pouty pout. We will examine the effects of
aging from youth to mature person, how this changes our features and how we
express this in our paintings. Artists will be asked to bring a an 8 x 10
photo(s) of your choice to examine the artistic aspects of a facial portrait
as well as the more creative side of expressing that person's personality. A
materials list will be sent 1 week before the workshop. If artists that have

Capture your four legged loved ones in this one day workshop. Learn the importance of choosing a correct image for canvas size, composition, and the impact of a good focal point. Techniques learnt in this workshop can carry though to other subject matters.

Students are encouraged to send a high resolution image of their pet that they wish to paint ahead of time to info@artschoolptbo.org.  This will be printed off in colour and will be ready for the day of the workshop.

Canvases will be provided. It is encouraged for you to bring your own paints if you are an intermediate painter. This will help with your colour mixing techniques if you are using colours you are use to. You can paint in oil or acrylic.
